The Storm Water Department was originally created under the Branch Administration to study the flooding problems of Alexandria and to fund project to help alleviate those problems. Over 30 years, and with great success, the City has constructed new storm sewers, separated sanitary sewers, and installed many new sewers in an effort to reduce, remove, or eliminate localized flooding. Over this time, the City has also performed many studies, plans, and even designs for improvements to Pipe Creek and its repetitive breech of its banks.
Though many projects, and ideas concerning a "big fix" for Pipe Creek -
Through this project the City has been able to purchase 4 residential structures, and is currently seeking the acquisition and demolition of 4 more. These properties, once demolished, will be placed into the City's park system for green space for perpetuity. Storm Water is a hot topic for today's municipalities. Every drop of rain is now being accounted for by newly penned State Statutes. Alexandria is now an MS4 community (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System), and is required to account for every storm sewer system in its jurisdiction. We have begun mapping, testing, and analyzing our storm sewers for water quality.
As the movie Finding Nemo quipped "all drains lead to the Ocean", all of your drains lead to Pipe Creek, and the State of Indiana wants to make sure we all know it. Storm Drain markers have been placed on all drains that lead directly to the creek in an effort to notify the public that dumping here has a direct impact on local water quality.
As a part of this process, and recent legislation, the City has passed a new Storm Water Ordinance that affects us all. All new development, and redevelopment in Alexandria will be subject to much more stringent requirements protecting our waters and Storm Sewers. Please check the new Ordinance (soon to be Published on this site) to make your next project a success.
