Possibilities

Former Mayor Skaggs appointed a committee to develop a plan of replacing trees on N. Harrison Street, a main artery to the center of town.  The committee will also propose plans for upkeep and a city policy of continued beautification.

The committee is charged with working with a landscape architect from the Council of Governments under Jerry Bridges. Indiana & Michigan Electric Company will also assist in the plan on North Harrison St. from the railroad at Tyler to State Road 28.

The project is progressing with planting planned for spring 2008. COG will coordinate the tree variety and planting care. I & M will use their arborist (tree specialist) to help select trees that will not interfere with electrical lines.

The original project proposal topped $225,000 with complex curb changes and bump outs. The council elected to involve city employees and scale the project down to a reasonable $25,000. Donations are expected to cover the majority of the costs.

Unsolicited pledges have already topped $7,000. You may make tax deductible contribution to the city tree fund by making your check payable to the City of Alexandria. Jan Lynch, Clerk Treasurer will accept the checks at the City Hall or you may mail them to 125 N Wayne Street.

The committee will investigate becoming a Tree City USA. Tree Cities follow a plan of care for present trees and replacement in a locality. Specific recommendations and planning are part of the program. Anderson and other area Indiana cities have enrolled in the program.

Mayor Skaggs appointed David Steele to head the Tree Committee for North Harrison Street. Serving on the committee are Bill Gaither, Tom Smith and Clerk Treasurer Jan Lynch.
